Habeas Corpus
I saw Habeas Corpus last night at Actors Studio Bangsar and it was simply wonderful. I was in stitches from start to finish. It was full of typically English humour, dry and wry (yet ham sap at the same time). And its good comic timing was a treat to watch. It's possibly the best show Chris Jacob's ensemble has put on yet.
After taking a hiatus from the ensemble for about 6 months now, it's so fun to watch them on stage. Makes me miss all of them so much. The hours spent on biomechanics (physical theatre). The things Chris would make us do. Gosh, the laughter and the chemistry we all had!
KC (my colleague and stage-kaki) and H have grown so much as actors, and I'm not referring to their breasts (watch the play and you'll know what I mean). And the rest of them, I don't know another group of people more dedicated to the the craft than this bunch. And these people really love what they do. To a point where in the first few years of the ensemble's existence, we didn't care much about commercial success. We simply wanted to improve our skills and stay true to the Grotowski principles (they are interesting ones too, such as the abhorrence of self-indulgence on stage).
Talking to Chris last night at intermission made me itch to go back. But I wonder if it'd be fair to the group if my passion for the arts is no longer as fiery as theirs. Chris asked me to get involved again cos there are more fun projects coming up. And now that the KL Ensemble is a registered company with its own permanent 'home' soon, it will no longer be a nomadic bunch of actors hopping from one rehearsal venue to another.
Aaaargh. Time involved would include one weekend afternoon a week and a weekday night on a regular basis. Of course, if a production is on the cards, it'd be many more nights and weekends.
Anyway, if you haven't watched Habeas Corpus, do check it out. It will be worth your while.
